Oil vs Water Based Stains

Welcome to Fence Fanatics, the premier provider of fence staining services in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

When it comes to staining your fence, you have two main options: oil-based stains and water-based stains. Understanding the differences between these two types of stains can help you make an informed decision about which one is best for your fence.

Oil-based stains are made from a combination of pigments and oil, typically linseed oil or tung oil. They are known for their ability to penetrate deep into the wood, providing a long-lasting finish that is resistant to peeling and flaking. Oil-based stains are also resistant to water, making them a good choice for fences in damp or humid environments. However, oil-based stains can be more difficult to clean up and have a strong, pungent smell. They also contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can be harmful to the environment and may require special disposal. We recommend using oil based stains on fences less than 10 years old that do not have a water based stain already on them.

Water-based stains, on the other hand, are made from a combination of pigments and water. They are known for their ease of use and quick drying time. Water-based stains are also more environmentally friendly, as they have lower levels of VOCs and are easier to clean up. However, they may not penetrate as deeply into the wood as oil-based stains and may not be as resistant to peeling and flaking. They may also not be as resistant to water and may require more frequent reapplication in damp or humid environments. Once a water based stain has been applied to a surface we recommend that you continue to use water based. This is because the removal of water based paints can cause damage to the underlying wood. You can apply a water based stain over an oil.

When it comes to staining your fence two things must be done. The fence must be cleaned of organic material and the fence must be less than 16% relative moisture. The moisture content can be measured by a meter that has two prongs inserted into the wood.

Ultimately, the best choice for your fence will depend on your specific needs and preferences. At Fence Fanatics, we offer both oil-based and water-based stains and can help you choose the best option for your fence.
